In February 2008 MOCAD organized two simultaneous exhibitions - Holy Hip-Hop! New Paintings by Alex Melamid and ReFusing Fashion: Rei Kawakubo. Lana Cavar came to Detroit to work on the design of exhibition materials for the shows. Basically we treated the two shows separately and the only place they come together is on MOCAD's garage door. The Melamid show was comprised of 12 oil paintings of hip-hop stars and it was in a way much more straightforward than the Kawakubo show. For the Kawakubo show we made a series of posters that were hung at evenly spaced intervals around the museum to lead people into the exhibit. Inside the exhibit there were about 30 posters that made up a timeline of Rei Kawakubo's life that ran around the outer wall of the exhibit. The poster-like thing is the gallery guide that was printed to go with the show. It folds down to 8.5 x 11" and has pictures of all the clothes and print ephemera in the show. (2008)
